Djelem is dead… Long Live Djelem Project!
The newly renamed Djelem Project has been roaming the world beat international scene with its unique blend of world rhythms and Eastern European inspired lyrics for the past fourteen years. The band’s guests for this particular project are Guy Dubuc on piano, Marc Lessard on drums, Guy Kaye on guitars, Rémy Malo on bass, Michel Dubeau on Asian flutes and Rod Shearer as sound engineer.
In 2005 with its fourth album The Bridge, Djelem shuffled its member lineup: while Moldavian violinist Sergeï Trofanov and Claude Simard remained, Sonya Sanscartier, already known as backup vocalist for the group became its lead singer to general acclaim, supplying heart-felt lyrics in five languages.
«A Sky With No Clouds», Djelem Project’s fifth opus is its first in Shakespeare’s tongue and is almost entirely dedicated to the Anglophone “Soul Gypsys” that are Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Rufus Wainwright, Dewey Bunnell from America, Annie Lennox, Rob Thomas, Patrick Pleau, of Montreal group Plajia and Toronto’s singer-songwriter Clayton MacDonald, who collaborates on three of the tracks.
The album has been produced by the duo Bob and Bill (Guy Dubuc and Marc Lessard) along with Claude Simard. So far, all three have collaborated to numerous Orange Music releases.
Time has really been flying ever since 1994, the beginnings of Djelem Project; its “folk world” music has been heard in over 35 countries, thanks to Putumayo Records and its compilation Gypsy Caravan, on which the band was featured. Their newest project, «A Sky With No Clouds» will no doubt reach and impress even more new listeners from around the world.

Depuis quatorze ans déjà, la formation Djelem Project, de son nouveau nom synonyme d’une collaboration soutenue avec Guy Dubuc au piano, Marc Lessard à la batterie, Guy Kaye aux guitares, Rémy Malo à la basse, Michel Dubeau aux flûtes asiatiques et Rod Shearer au son, évolue sur la scène world mondiale avec sa fusion unique de rythmes et de textes inspirés de l’Europe de l’Est.
En 2005, son quatrième album, The Bridge, nous arrivevait avec un remaniement au sein du groupe: ses fondateurs, le violoniste Moldave Sergeï Trofanov et Claude Simard, demeuraient fidèles au poste alors que Sonya Sanscartier, choriste du groupe depuis 1997, devenait la chanteuse soliste et ne reçu que des éloges pour ses interprétations en cinq langues.
Ce cinquième album est le premier opus anglophone du groupe et est presque entièrement dédié aux « Gypsys dans l’âme » de langue anglaise que sont les Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Rufus Wainwright, Dewey Bunnell de America, Annie Lennox, Rob Thomas, Patrick Pleau du groupe montréalais Plajia et l’auteur-compositeur-interprète torontois Clayton MacDonald qui participe à trois chansons.
La production a été réalisé par le duo Bob and Bill (Guy Dubuc et Marc Lessard) et Claude Simard. Rappelons qu’ils ont tous les trois collaboré à plusieurs albums du label Orange Music.
Beaucoup d’eau et de notes ont coulé sous les ponts depuis 1994, les débuts de Djelem Project: sa musique « Folk-World » a été entendue dans plus de 35 pays grâce entre autre au label Putumayo et sa compilation Gypsy Caravan où le groupe figure et nul doute que «A Sky With No Clouds» surprendra et saura rejoindre de nouveaux auditeurs de partout dans le monde.
